The heating and cooling equipment will NOT perform better if it is BIGGER than it needs to be. Research has shown that when the HVAC is too large for the home, it can cause structural damage due to excess humidity. And let’s not forget the bigger price tag for the unit itself and the subsequent operating costs for the larger fan and compressor. An accurate and efficient system will run steadily without stopping and starting for better comfort and lower utility costs.

Relative humidity levels in residential houses should be around 50% in the cooling season (summer) for the Chicago area; if you have higher levels, it could indicate a problem. This often happens when an AC system is too large.

During the heating season (winter), comfort is impacted by oversized mechanical systems as well, especially with heat pumps. A heat pump has to move more air around in order for it to maintain even temperatures. If it is too large, it will have to move even more air, creating chilly drafts. On to the Radon issue – Excellent results with Aeroseal! From 5 + to a .4. Before sealing like we discussed, I had warm air coming out of the sump basket with the furnace running. Even with the furnace running, it is still pulling air in now. If you are buying a house, I would strongly recommend having them do an energy audit on it, in addition to your usual home inspection.
